Description from the seller

A fine illuminated Qur'anic manuscript folio, Persia or Mughal India, c.1650.

A single folio from an illuminated Qur'an, written in elegant Naskh script in black ink. the main text in Arabic is interspersed with interlinear commentary in Persian, characteristic of the Indo-Persian scholarly manuscripts intended for study and devotion. The uppermost panel contains the Surah, identifying as the Meccan chapter 76, Surat al-Insan (Humans), v.1-13, which explain human creation, the test of free will, and the contrasting eternal destinies of the wicked and the righteous. It highlights how the pious are rewarded in Paradise for combining the love of God with charity and service to humanity.

The script is evenly spaced fine naskh scripture in a good hand, with the verses marked by simple gold aya. A number of frame lines in red, gold and blue surrounds the scripture. A graceful gilt 'unwan' (palette finial) adorns the left margin. The script within the unwanted is difficult to make out, but may include a dedication and/or blessing. Mohammad can be made out and this is likely to refer to the Prophet.
