Description from the seller
Antique cast-iron mortar and pestle with pestle – France, 17th/18th century
A beautiful and well-used antique mortar (mortar) with the accompanying heavy pestle, entirely made of solid cast iron. A characterful piece of history that fits perfectly in a country kitchen, a rugged interior, or as a unique collectible.
This heavy, authentic ensemble exudes pure craftsmanship from bygone times. The mortar has a classic, slightly flared shape with a sturdy, wide foot rim and is equipped with two sturdy knob-like handles. At the bottom of the cylinder are subtle, contouring profile lines cast into the iron.
The object is supplied including the original heavy cast-iron pestle, which features a characteristic, bulbous head with which herbs, spices or medicinal substances were ground by hand in the past.
The cast iron has developed a wonderfully worn surface and patina over the centuries, with a beautiful play of dark iron tones and natural, superficial surface rust. This aged character gives the object its unmistakable historical charm.
Given the size and especially the weight, this item must be picked up.
