Description from the seller
MANET (Édouard)
" My Exhibition Painting "
Autograph letter signed " E. Manet . 81 rue Guyot "
One 12mo page
Embossed letterhead with the initials " S.M " of his wife Suzanne.
" Sir,
I would be very eager to submit to you my exhibition painting; could you do me the pleasure of coming to see it tomorrow, Sunday, after two o’clock.
Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my respectful sentiments.
E. Manet
81 rue Guyot "
Important letter which most probably refers to his famous painting " Le déjeuner sur l’herbe "
In 1861 Manet established his studio at 81 Rue Guyot in the 17th arrondissement of Paris (now Rue Médéric) and remained there until 1872.
It was in this studio that Manet executed the portrait of Émile Zola to thank him for his support in face of the numerous attacks of which Manet was the target.
Probably following the visit of the commissioner to whom this letter is addressed, the painting was refused and exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in May 1863, then withdrawn as it caused a scandal.
This canvas can be considered one of the first works of modern painting, hence the historical importance of this letter.
Penultimate photo: The painting exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
Provenance: Auction in Paris. The sale receipt serving as the certificate of authenticity given to the purchaser.
Fast and secure shipping.
