Table barometer in gilded and patinated bronze, an antique transformation of a French clock, with an estimated period of 1900–1910, measuring 34 cm high, 13.5 cm wide and 27 cm deep, in good condition and in working order.
Description from the seller
Ancient transformation of a pendulum clock
Restoration – 19th century
A rare and elegant decorative object from a French clock dating to the Restoration era / early Louis-Philippe (circa 1825-1840), transformed at the beginning of the 20th century into an aneroid barometer.
The composition depicts a young romantic figure seated on a rock. The subject, dressed in a 17th-century costume, could evoke a cross-dressed heroine from theater or Romantic literature, such as Rosalinde in Shakespeare's As You Like It or Mademoiselle de Maupin, a famous character inspired by Théophile Gautier's novel.
The sculpture is cast in finely chiseled bronze, partly gilded with mercury and patinated. The decorative elements feature several naturalistic motifs: shells, starfish, and rocks.
The clock dial was formerly replaced by an aneroid barometer with direct reading, preserving a decorative and scientific function. This early transformation bears witness to the object's evolution over its history.
The whole rests on a blackened wood base added later.
