Description from the seller
up for auction, a rare and fascinating foldable antique stereoscope Omnium III model, a superb example of an optical entertainment instrument produced in France in the early decades of the 20th century, approximately around 1910 or 1925. this pocket-sized device was used for the three-dimensional viewing of special stereoscopic photographic plates, an extremely popular and avant-garde pastime for the society of the era. the lot stands out for its ingenious space-saving construction: the nickel-plated metal body folds in on itself via a hinge system and can be easily disassembled. the device is equipped with a double ocular with dark fringes for framing and comes complete with its handle or removable grip in turned and black-lacquered wood, which allowed the viewer to be held comfortably in front of the eyes. accompanying it is the splendid original protective box made of rigid cardboard coated in dark green, bearing on the lid the gold inscription stéréoscope omnium iii clearly legible, enhanced by a delicate ornamental meander along the edges. aesthetically, the object presents in excellent overall historical preservation, preserving its splendid vintage patina. the original box shows slight and natural signs of wear along the edges due to time, which only serve to confirm the authenticity and age of the piece. we invite you to view with extreme attention all attached photographs, an integral part of the description, to examine the condition of each individual component. a magnificent and unusual addition for collectors of scientific antiques, pre-cinema or rare optical instruments.
