Goldface, gilded - Bronze - Nepal - Late 20th century

This statue shows a beautifully detailed gilded bronze statue of Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, handmade in Nepal.

This type of Chenrezig statue is relatively new (modern craftsmanship) and likely dates from the last few decades of the 20th century.

Although the statue follows traditional Tibetan Buddhist techniques and iconography, the bright color pigments, the condition of the fire-gilded bronze, and the sleek finish point to a contemporary creation by modern Newari artisans from the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal.
