Description from the seller
animal mask
Mali
Wood sculpture
The characteristics of this mask:
An animal mask with a cubist and geometric appearance.
In the background there are two large animal ears erected vertically; they indicate the wearer's high auditory capacity and his attitude of extreme vigilance.
The nose is flat in high relief, pierced by three metal rings.
The eyes are carved through the full thickness of the mask and take the shape of an isosceles triangle (two sides equal), with the vertex directed upward.
The mouth is cylindrical in shape and in high relief.
The Dogon settled between the 14th and 15th centuries AD in the bend of the Niger River, south of Mali, on a plateau bounded by the Bandiagara cliffs. It is a long sandstone ridge (sedimentary rock formed from sand grains cemented together) located in a region occupying the eastern part of Mali in the Mopti region, stretching from northeast to south over a distance of 200 km and extending into the northwest of Burkina Faso.
