A circa 1900–1910 silver cigarette case from Belgium in Art Nouveau/Japonisme style with floral engravings and initials EV, measuring 8.65 × 6.1 × 1.6 cm and weighing 43.2 g.
Description from the seller
Beautiful silver circa 1890 Japonisme / Art Nouveau 'cigarette case' with floral embellishments and initials 'EV'(?). Subtle but tested on silver!
N.B. This is a typical example of the early period of Art Nouveau where Japonisme has a clear influence! Japonisme (the fascination with Japanese art since about 1870) formed the aesthetic foundation for Art Nouveau. Western artists were inspired by flat planes, bright colours and asymmetrical compositions. This led to the organic, flowing lines that characterize Art Nouveau. Origin: probably Belgium. (because much Belgian silverware goes unnoticed)
