Description from the seller
Set of 6 signed autograph items from 1948-1954. The set includes:
• four autograph letters signed by André Billy;
• a signed autograph letter of thanks on Figaro letterhead;
• a signed autograph greeting card, printed “Mr. & Mrs. André Billy”.
Formats:
• Letters: about 20 x 15 cm.
• Letter on Figaro paper: about 18 x 11.5 cm.
• Business card: about 8.5 x 5.5 cm.
The four letters, written on La Chevrette’s letterhead from Barbizon (Seine-et-Marne), attest to a close and friendly relationship. The correspondence notably recalls memories of meetings, thanks for books received, health news, stays in Barbizon, as well as various literary and bibliophilic reflections. One letter develops a dispute with a bookseller regarding received books and an invoice, offering an interesting glimpse into the daily concerns of the critic and scholar.
Notably, there is a letter dated Thursday, July 8, 1948, in which André Billy thanks his correspondent for a stay in Paris and speaks of his return to Barbizon with “the mind and heart filled with nostalgic fragrances,” as well as a long letter dated December 31, 1950 sending his greetings and revisiting bibliographic matters.
The whole set constitutes a warm testimony to André Billy’s literary sociability during the years when he divided his time between Paris and Barbizon.
Very good condition, usual postal folds.
