For a thorough understanding of this mask, detailed explanations can be found in the manual "Masks in Congo" by Manuel Jordan, as well as in the work from the Tervuren Museum titled "Masterpieces from Central Africa". It comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Chokwe mask depicting an elderly woman evokes wisdom, knowledge accumulated over the years, and the honor paid to female ancestors. Worn during rites and traditional festivities, it underlines the importance of women in the preservation and transmission of the community's cultural heritage.
The Chokwe are a Bantu-language-speaking people of Central and Southern Africa, mainly present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Angola, and to a lesser extent in Zambia. A few thousand also live in Namibia.
This dance and initiation mask is in good condition (see photo). The materials used are wood, natural pigment.
