Marc Riboud
CHANEL /2015/Japanese/235*230*20
“Alaska,” a photo book by French photographer Marc Riboud. Riboud was one of the founding members of Magnum Photos. He is known as the first Westerner to undertake a photographic assignment in China, and as a photojournalist who continued to cover stories in Southeast Asia, Africa, and elsewhere, his work has appeared numerous times in publications such as *Life* and *The New York Times*. He served as president of Magnum Photos in the 1970s, and his series on China and Vietnam have won numerous awards, establishing him as one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. This book was published to coincide with an exhibition held in 2015 at the Chanel Ginza Nexus Hall in Japan and consists of images taken during Riboud’s 1958 journey through Alaska. Discovered decades later by Libou’s wife, Marc, these photographs of Alaska masterfully depict the overwhelming power of nature and the people struggling desperately to survive in the cold. The contrast between the white of the snow and the black of the subjects is stunning, making this a collection of Libou’s lesser-known masterpieces. The white-based cover design embodies the beauty and elegance characteristic of Chanel.
