Description from the seller
Headboard, mahogany wood and lemonwood, Edwardian, p.s. XX – England
Style: Edwardian
Materials: Mahogany wood and lemonwood
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: England
Good condition considering its age and use
Dimensions: 130 x 170 cm.
Exceptional English bed headboard from the early 20th century, in Edwardian style. Made of mahogany with lemonwood marquetry. Its structure and ornamentation reflect the period’s characteristic lines, with a clear Neoclassical influence (such as the upper corner finials), with marquetry details, and an emphasis on symmetry and formal elegance.
The central decorative medallion is commonly known as a fan patera (fan-shaped patera) or sunburst marquetry motif. It is an oval (or circular) inlay in which the wood segments are arranged radially, simulating the folds of an open fan. Although it is typical of Edwardian-era furniture, it is actually a Neoclassical-inspired design that revives the late eighteenth-century Sheraton style.
The Edwardian era in the United Kingdom refers to the reign of Edward VII, between 1901 and 1910, son of Queen Victoria. However, the period extended until the end of the First World War, in 1918. The new king, fond of travel, popularized among the elite the taste for continental Europe. The furniture of that period is characterized by an emphasis on elegance and sobriety, opposite to the luxury and opulence of French furniture. Mahogany wood established as the predominant material, introduced to the country during the second half of the eighteenth century. It was already used without overlaid bronze decorations, as in earlier periods. Unlike Victorian furniture, which tended to be heavy and ornate, Edwardian furniture adopted a lighter aesthetic with Neoclassical and Georgian influences.
