For an in-depth understanding of this mask, detailed explanations can be found in the manual "Masks in Congo" by Manuel Jordan, as well as in the Musée Tervuren's work titled "Masterpieces from Central Africa". It comes from the DR Congo.
The Cihongo mask represents strength, power and wealth among the Chokwe. It is worn during traditional ceremonies, initiatory rites, and major celebrations. It symbolizes the authority of the chief and serves to protect the community while bringing prosperity and well-being to the village.
The Chokwe are a Bantu-speaking population of Central and Southern Africa, mainly present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Angola, and to a lesser extent in Zambia. A few thousand also live in Namibia.
This dance and initiation mask is in good condition (see photo). The materials used are wood and natural pigment.
