Description from the seller
Starke Novadent Wall Clock – Space Age Design – Germany, circa 1976
A striking and highly decorative German wall clock from the mid-1970s, branded Starke Novadent, featuring the technically sophisticated Junghans W736 electromechanical movement.
The design perfectly captures the Space Age aesthetic of the decade. The large, aerodynamic case resembles a polished metallic pebble or spacecraft capsule, with soft organic curves and a futuristic profile. The silver sunburst-effect dial is enhanced by bold stylised Arabic numerals, black hands and a contrasting red seconds hand, creating a strong visual impact typical of late 1970s industrial design.
The front is protected by an elegant domed glass crystal, which enhances the sculptural appearance of the clock while adding depth to the dial. Thanks to its generous dimensions and distinctive shape, this piece works equally well as a functional timekeeper and as a decorative design object.
The clock is fitted with a Junghans W736 movement, belonging to the final evolution of the historic ATO-Mat series introduced in 1976. This calibre represents one of the last and most advanced electromechanical movements produced before quartz technology became dominant.
Unlike quartz clocks, timekeeping is regulated by an electronically controlled oscillating balance wheel. The movement operates at 4 Hz (28,800 A/h), providing improved stability and accuracy. During operation, the characteristic lateral impulse lever can be observed moving inside the mechanism, a fascinating feature of this transitional electromechanical technology.
The movement has been wall-mounted and tested for over one month, maintaining regular and reliable timekeeping.

Historical Note
The Junghans W736 could have continued the ATO-Mat tradition; however, shortly after its introduction, Junghans launched its second generation of quartz movements (W750/W751). Although technically excellent, the rapid adoption of quartz technology marked the end of the electromechanical era, making the W736 one of the final representatives of this important chapter in horological history.
