Northern Netherlands – Republic of Overijssel – city of Deventer – Ducaton 1667

Very attractive and very rare silver Ducat struck in 1667 by the city of Deventer, within the Republic of Overijssel in the Northern Netherlands. An imposing trade coin from the period of the Dutch Republic, belonging to the great silver crown coins that played an important role in international trade in the 17th century.

Obverse:
Garrisoned knight on horseback to the right with drawn sword. Under the horse the city coat of arms of Deventer within an inner circle. Inscription: MONO. ARG. CIVIT. DAVENTRIAE (“Silver coin of the city of Deventer”).

Reverse:
Crowned arms of the United Provinces with crowned lions as supporters. Inscription: CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCVNT (“Harmony makes small things grow”), with the year 1667 in the legend.
