Description from the seller
Chinese bronze openwork brush pot (bitong) – 17th century, Qing Dynasty
Beautiful and rare Chinese bronze openwork brush pot (bitong) from the 17th century, richly executed in relief with a majestic dragon among graceful cloud motifs. The powerful dragon motif, a symbol of imperial power, prosperity and protection, is carved with great skill and gives the piece impressive depth.
The upper rim is decorated with a classic geometric leiwen (key-fret) band, while the underside is also finished decoratively. The dark brown to almost black patina testifies to its age and lends the piece a particularly elegant appearance.
Brush pots like this were used by Chinese scholars for storing writing brushes and formed an essential part of the traditional study. Due to the refined workmanship and the decorative character, this object is both a collectible art object and an attractive display piece.
