Description from the seller

The Höhm trailer is a high-precision, cutaway teaching model built in Germany between the 1950s and 1970s. They were used in driving schools to teach the mechanical operation of heavy vehicles and the articulation of trailers.

Main Features:
• Cutaway design: The body is usually open or absent to show internal components such as the chassis, suspension, and braking system.
• Functional Mechanics: They include real-scale mechanical systems. The wheels rotate, the suspension dampens, and in the more advanced models, the air or inertia braking system is representative of the real one.
• Noble Materials: They are mainly constructed from metal (steel and aluminum), wood, and rubber for the tires. They do not use plastics, which gives them substantial weight.
• Collectible Value: Today they are museum pieces or luxury items for collectors of technical automobiles. A complete truck-and-trailer set can fetch very high prices at auctions of technical antiques.

The Höhm tandem (twin-axle) trailers are exceptional pieces of technical collecting, designed to demonstrate advanced concepts of physics and mechanics applied to heavy-duty vehicles. These models were used to teach how the tandem axle improves load distribution and directional stability, preventing all the weight from resting on the tractor’s hitch.

In driving schools of the time, the twin-axle model was essential for practicing reversing maneuvers. With a longer, more stable base, steering responses are less twitchy than on a short trailer, allowing the student to better understand the technical trajectory before moving on to the real truck.

Technical Specifications of the Didactic Model
• Inertia Braking System (Overrun Brake): Its most complex feature. The model lets you see how, when braking the car, the trailer’s inertia pushes the hitch and mechanically activates the drum brakes of the wheels.
• Independent Suspension: Unlike single-axle models, twin-axle ones typically show leaf springs or torsion-bar suspensions that work together to maintain balance.
• Materials and Dimensions:
o Construction: Cast or aluminum steel chassis, with real rubber tires marked as “HOHM-MODELLE.”
o Size: 110 cm long and weighing about 9 kg, reflecting its industrial robustness.

I haven’t cleaned it because if I do, I’ll surely keep it!
