Pair of stone seals from China, of the Republican era (1912–1949), titled Paire de Sceaux, each seal 12 cm high with a square base and a carved bucolic scene of a shepherd boy on a water buffalo, showing a red-brown patina with natural green and yellow inclusions, unsigned and in good condition with minor surface wear.
Description from the seller
Pair of Seals in Sculpted Stone
Republic Era
China, (1912-1949)
With a height of 12 cm, this remarkable pair of seals carved from steatite (Shoushan stone or similar) features a rich patina nuanced with brick red, ochre, and brown tones, enhanced by natural greenish and yellow inclusions.
Each piece is topped with a round-bosomed sculpted group depicting the traditional bucolic theme of the child herdsman on his water buffalo. The figures are portrayed with expressive, smiling, jovial faces, wearing a traditional tunic. They sit astride the animal and lean forward firmly.
The animal is depicted descending a rugged rock, with a cautious step. The coat details are finely suggested by dense parallel incisions, and the powerful anatomy of the beast (striped horns, nostrils) is captured with noble vigor. The base of each seal is square-sectioned, left raw on the sides to highlight the stone’s veins and chromatic variations.
Condition: Good overall, with light surface wear and small nicks inherent to the softness of the stone, bearing witness to its age. Some chips.
A very fine pair of cabinets, of great vivacity of execution, perfectly illustrating the charm of early to mid-20th century productions.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
