Description from the seller
YEMEN. Riyal. AH1382/1963. Muhammad al-Badr (1962-1963)
- Value: 1 Riyal.
- Reign: Muhammad al-Badr (1962-1963).
- Year: AH1382/1963.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: المتوكل على الله محمد البدر (Al-Mutawakkil ’ala Allah Muhammad al-Badr), with royal titles and legends of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen. Reverse: Central vegetal branch surrounded by ornamental motifs, with the date ١٣٨٢-١٩٦٣ (AH1382/1963).
- Grading: MS64 (NGC).
1 Riyal silver coin minted during the brief reign of Imam and king Muhammad al-Badr, last sovereign of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen. The obverse features an elegant Arabic calligraphic composition with the name and titles of the monarch within an elaborate frame of vegetal arabesques, characteristic of traditional Islamic art. The reverse shows a stylized plant branch surrounded by an interlaced decorative border, preserving the decorative aesthetic typical of mid-20th-century Arabic numismatics. The specimen retains an attractive original satin sheen, with sharp relief, relatively clean fields and light contact marks compatible with its MS64 grade. This coin also holds notable historical interest as it corresponds to the last year of the Yemeni monarchy, overthrown after the 1962 Republican Revolution, becoming a numismatic testament to one of the most consequential periods in Yemen’s modern history.
