Description from the seller
Fang Ngil
The Fang Ngil mask has become a classic for collectors of African art.
A long, bi-form mask with a center bleached by kaolin. The face has a heart-shaped form whose close-set eyebrows extend into an immense straight nose, under which a protruding mouth pushes forward. There are tribal scarifications, called “rake,” characteristic of the ethnicity.
Ngil masks were used for judicial purposes, as highlighted by the severity of the prominent eyebrows and the tiny incisions where the eyes would be.
They were worn by authorities (notables) in charge of designating those responsible for crimes. The Fang culture is easily recognizable in many phenomena typical of the spread of this ethnic group in Central Africa, in the three republics of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon.
