Before Osiris became important, Anubis was the chief burial god. Probably in the beginning he was only involved with burials and occupied himself with following the king in the underworld. The name 'Anubis' would be linked to the word 'son of the king' in the same relation to Osiris. The jackal head was chosen because of the jackals in the desert that were digging in the ancient royal tombs. The other jackal god was Wepwawet. In the Old Kingdom prayers were written on the walls of mastabas, and in the Pyramid Texts Anubis is very often mentioned.
Ultimately the cult of Anubis assimilated with that of Osiris, of whom it was said that he was the father of Anubis and that Anubis embalmed him. There are several myths about his origin. According to one text he was the son of Hesat and Bastet, according to other sources he was the son of Seth or Ra with Nephthys (according to a source of Plutarchus). He was the illegitimate son of Osiris and Nephthys, Isis's sister. Isis had discovered that Osiris had betrayed her, but Nephthys, who did not want the child out of fear for her husband Seth, had hidden it. Isis found Anubis and cared for him. Anubis would also ensure that Osiris came back to life and thus became the first mummy.
