This African animal mask, adorned with polychrome hues, would honor a water spirit.
Wear from use.
The Bozo, mostly fishermen and farmers, live in the northern part of the country in the Bambara region within the inner Niger delta and today remain semi-nomadic, moving their settlements with the seasonal floods. A Mandé-speaking people, they speak Sorogama. Within their group, one distinguishes the Sorko or Sorogo, the Hain, and the Tie.
In addition to their remarkable traditional masks, the Bozo and the Bambara are reputed for their puppets of varying sizes and often articulated, exhibited during the Sogow bo puppet theatre, organized at the initiative of village youths, mainly in the Segou region, which plays an educational role. The invention of these puppets is attributed to the forest spirits.
