Description from the seller
Monumental 68cm Belgian Studio Stoneware Floor Vase by Roger Guérin – Model V70M2 – Rare "Hanseatic Cog" Ship Relief
Presenting a true investment-grade masterpiece of 20th-century Belgian ceramic art: an imposing, monumental salt-glazed floor pitcher/amphora standing a magnificent 68 cm tall. Hand-signed and master-coded on the underside by the world-renowned Atelier Guérin of Bouffioulx, Belgium.
This exceptionally rare piece represents the studio's highly elite V70 series: the grandest master-mold scale class produced by the workshop, reserved solely for architectural statement pieces.
Design & Artistry:
The front displays an exceptional, deeply incised sgraffito relief panel depicting a medieval sailing vessel (Hanseatic Cog / Caravel) under full sail, highlighted by a vibrant, glossy cobalt blue glaze. The reverse and sides feature fluid, organic waves and flame patterns swept in a rich, metallic iron-oxide brown and blue glaze. The beautifully pitted texture of the traditional salt-glazed stoneware body showcases the raw, rugged aesthetic favored by Art Deco and Brutalist design movements.
Artist/Workshop: Atelier Roger & Jules Guérin
Origin: Bouffioulx, Belgium
Markings: Hand-incised signature "Guerin" and mold code "V70M2" on the unglazed base.
Period: c. 1940–1960
Height: 68 cm
Weight: Approx. 9 kg (Heavy, substantial museum scale)
Condition: Beautiful vintage condition overall with deep, crisp glazes. No cracks or body restorations. There is a small, superficial glaze chip present on the inner edge of the pouring spout (fully visible in the detailed close-up photographs), which does not compromise the structural integrity or the immense display presence of this monumental piece.
Please review all high-resolution photographs to fully appreciate the monumental scale and fine hand-finished details of this rare Belgian masterpiece.
