An antique French 19th‑century tantalus in Wortelnotenhout with copper inlay, dating 1850–1900, 25 × 20 × 20 cm, featuring two copper handles, four original crystal decanters, a lock plate with the original key, and a red capitonné interior, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
This 19th-century French liqueur cabinet, also known as a tantalus, is crafted from high-quality walnut root wood. Its exterior is meticulously inlaid with copper piping (inlay), creating a subtle contrast with the dark wood. The sides feature two ornamental copper handles, which enhance both the functionality and the stately appearance of the piece. In the 19th century, such a cave à liqueur was a status symbol in French and European salons. It served not only to present precious liqueurs after dinner but also to store them securely. Thanks to the lockable design (tantalus), owners could protect their spirits from unauthorized consumption by staff or guests.
The interior of the chest is lined with tufted red silk. This soft cushion protected the crystal stoppers during transport. On the front there is a brass escutcheon. The original key is present, which is essential for the operation of the tantalus. This chest also contains four original crystal decanters.
