Description from the seller
Olympus 35-S + G.Zuiko F.C. 4.5cm 1:1.9 — Classic 1950s Working 35mm Rangefinder with Top-Tier 7-Element Fast Lens, No Battery Required
A working Olympus 35-S — a beautifully made Japanese 35mm rangefinder camera from the mid-1950s, fitted with the highly regarded fast G.Zuiko F.C. (7-element Gauss-type, fully coated) 4.5cm f/1.9 fixed lens and a Seikosha-MX leaf shutter. The f/1.9 version is the top-tier optical configuration of the Olympus 35-S series, with the same fast G.Zuiko optical design also found on the later legendary Olympus 35 SP. The Olympus 35-S itself holds an important place in Japanese camera history — when introduced in 1955, it was the first Japanese camera to feature a rapid wind-on lever. A true mechanical classic that requires NO BATTERY whatsoever and is ready to load with film and shoot today.
Including:
- Camera body (Olympus 35-S)
- Fixed G.Zuiko F.C. 4.5cm 1:1.9 lens (built-in)
(No battery required — this camera is fully mechanical and has no electronic components)
Appearance:
Vintage cosmetic wear consistent with age (1950s camera). Some patina, light oxidation marks and small spots on the chrome top plate; leatherette body covering is intact with no peeling. The viewfinder and rangefinder windows are clear. No major dents or serious damage.
Function:
35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with Seikosha-MX leaf shutter (B, 1 s – 1/500 s), bright viewfinder with separate rangefinder window, coupled rangefinder for accurate focusing, fast f/1.9 lens, M/X flash synchronization with PC socket, and a mechanical self-timer.
Confirmed during inspection:
- Shutter: fires correctly
- Film advance lever: operates
- Rewind crank: operates
Other features (shutter release, shutter speed ring, aperture ring f/1.9 – f/22, rangefinder coupling, self-timer, flash sync) are present on the camera. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition.
No battery is required for any function of this camera. The Olympus 35-S is a fully mechanical rangefinder with no light meter and no electronic components — a major advantage for vintage shooters who want to avoid hunting for discontinued battery types.
Optical system (lens):
G.Zuiko F.C. 4.5cm 1:1.9 — a fast seven-element (the "G" designation indicates a 7-element Gauss-type design), fully-coated Olympus lens, one of the fastest fixed lenses ever fitted to a 1950s Japanese 35mm rangefinder. Widely praised for its sharpness, low-light capability, and beautiful rendering. The same optical design family is famously found on the highly sought-after Olympus 35 SP. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition of the optics.
Shutter / film chamber:
The Seikosha-MX leaf shutter blades appear clean. The film chamber and pressure plate are clean overall.
Notes:
The Olympus 35-S series is historically significant as Olympus's first 35mm coupled-rangefinder line, and the f/1.9 version is the top-tier optical specification within the series. It is widely regarded as the direct ancestor of the legendary Olympus 35 SP. A genuine 1950s mechanical Japanese rangefinder with a fast 7-element f/1.9 lens, ready to use without sourcing any specialized batteries. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition. As this is a 1950s camera, occasional servicing (CLA) is recommended for long-term reliable use.
