Description
Original double-hemisphere world map titled Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique ou Description Générale du Globe Terrestre et Aquatique en Deux Plan-Hemispheres, published in Paris by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in 1691 based on the geographic model devised by Nicolas Sanson, considered the founder of the French cartographic school. This antique map offers a comprehensive representation of the terrestrial globe, with particular attention to the geographic and hydrographic structure of the continents and oceans. The composition is organized in two large adjacent hemispheres, enriched by elegant Baroque decorative elements, allegorical cartouches finely engraved, and ornamental motifs reflecting the prestige of French cartography in the late 17th century. The map reflects the most up-to-date geographical knowledge of the era and depicts continents, oceans, seas, major river systems, archipelagos and sea routes according to the scientific criteria developed by Sanson and subsequently disseminated by Jaillot. Particularly significant is the representation of Northern America, Asia, and the vast southern regions still indicated as lands only partially known, evidence of the state of geographic explorations at the end of the seventeenth century. Made in copperplate engraving on paper, this large antique map blends scientific rigor, geographic synthesis and decorative quality, representing one of the most influential models of French cartography during Louis XIV's reign.
Historical-artistic note
Nicolas Sanson (1600–1667) is universally regarded as the founder of modern French cartography and introduced a rigorous method based on critical verification of geographic sources. Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632–1712), among the most important Parisian cartographic publishers of the period, acquired and developed Sanson's scientific legacy, publishing some of the most prestigious geographic collections of the late seventeenth century. The Atlas Nouveau represents one of the main tools for disseminating French geographical knowledge in Europe and constitutes a landmark in the history of scientific cartography.
Condition Report
Sheet in overall excellent condition. Slight traces of age compatible with the period. Engraved surface crisp, well printed and perfectly legible. Paper remains sound and well preserved. Verso white. Overall conservation very good.
