Boch Frères - Raymond Chevallier - Vase - Shape 89/1, Decor "Solid red and gold background" - Earthenware

Charming glazed earthenware vase by Boch Frères, produced in La Louvière during the period of artistic direction by Raymond Chevallier. It is model 89/1, presented here in the “Rouge et Or” decoration from the collection “Fonds unis et or,” an emblematic range of post-war productions where the sobriety of modern forms blends with the discreet richness of metallic highlights.

The piece adopts an balanced and elegant silhouette, composed of a generous ovoid body extended by a slightly flared cylindrical neck. A wide arched handle harmoniously connects the shoulder to the neck, giving the whole the appearance of a small decorative ewer. The glaze presents a deep ruby red tone with slightly cloudy nuances, highlighted by gold threads and gilding applied to the edge, the handle, and the base. The contrast between the solid background color and the gleam of gold underscores the purity of the volumes and the decidedly modern aesthetics of the model.

The condition is very satisfactory. The earthenware shows no crack, no chip, and no visible restoration. The glaze retains its original brilliance and its beautiful chromatic intensity. The gilding shows only light, occasional wear, mainly on the protruding areas of the handle and neck, consistent with the piece’s age and discreet to observe.

During the 1940s to 1960s, Boch Frères Keramis underwent significant renewal under the leadership of Raymond Chevallier (1929-2004), a major figure in Belgian ceramic design. While developing bold creations that became emblematic of the manufactory, he also encouraged modernization of the decorative repertoire and the forms produced by Boch. The “Fonds unis et or” series illustrates this period when the manufactory combined streamlined lines, bold colors, and refined finishes to meet contemporary tastes while preserving the quality of execution that earned La Louvière its reputation.
