Description from the seller

Nobuyoshi Araki's 1994 AaT ROOM edition Bokujū Kitan (墨汁綺譚 / Marvelous Tales of Black Ink) is a rare hardcover photobook published in a limited edition of 1,000 copies by Araki's own office, AaT ROOM.
It compiles works originally serialized in the magazine S&M Sniper. The title parodies Nagai Kafū's Bokutō Kitan (濹東綺譚), replacing “east” with “sumi” (墨 / ink) to create “墨汁綺譚” (Tales of Marvelous Ink).
The book features Araki’s signature monochromatic style: tightly bound nude women, over which he directly applied bold sumi ink calligraphy, scribbles, lines, and drawings by hand. This creates a hybrid of photography and ink painting, blending intense eroticism, decadence, artistic beauty, humor, and nihilism in classic Araki fashion.
Features include cloth binding with clear vinyl dust jacket, approx. 268 × 198 mm. Contents and layout differ from the later Heibonsha collected edition (1997) and the 2008 London exhibition version. A powerfully dark and provocative classic—very hard to obtain today.

Seller's Story

Totodo is a curated antiquarian bookstore based in Japan, dedicated to art books, photography, exhibition catalogues, artist publications, and rare out-of-print titles. Rather than operating as a volume-driven reseller, we approach bookselling as a form of editorial practice. Each work is carefully selected for its artistic significance, historical context, and lasting relevance, with an emphasis on titles that have shaped visual culture and contemporary thought. Drawing from decades of experience in the Japanese art book ecosystem, as well as relationships with collectors, estates, and specialized distributors, we are able to present material that is both culturally important and increasingly scarce in the international market. We maintain rigorous standards for condition assessment and bibliographic accuracy, and every item is securely packaged for international shipment. Our aim is to provide collectors and institutions with thoughtfully chosen works, professional service, and complete transparency.
