Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which appears as a strong rainbow play of color. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it its name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions within the mineral.
