The name is derived from the Greek "apatein," meaning roughly to deceive. In Greek mythology, Apate, the goddess of deception, fraud, and swindle, was one of the evil spirits released from Pandora's box. One of the reasons for this naming is certainly the wide range of colors in which apatite occurs. It was often mistaken in the past for another gemstone; for example royal blue or dark blue apatite closely resembles a blue sapphire. There were also confusions with tourmalines, peridots, and beryls. However, this gemstone historically led something of a shadowy existence in the world of jewelry and gemstones.
