Description from the seller
Origin. Gabon
Tribe name. Mitsogho
Material. Wood
Dimension. 55 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24-48h; open.
The piece presented is an anthropomorphic statuette attributed to the Sogho (Mitsogho) people of Gabon.
Style and form: It is a standing figure with a clean, streamlined stylization typical of the region's statuary. It features a long cylindrical neck supporting a head that is imposing compared to the rest of the body.
Face: The face is marked by a heart- or almond-shaped form, with incised features. A dark central line divides the forehead and extends toward the nose, emphasizing the facial structure. The eyes and mouth are represented by geometric incisions.
Patina: The piece has a light patina, often associated with kaolin (white clay) use, contrasting with the darker parts (black or brown tones) located notably on the hairstyle, the eyes, the hands, and the feet.
Body details: The silhouette is schematic. The torso shows prominent breasts, and the arms are folded against the body, the hands stylized with incisions. The legs are short and stocky, resting on large feet, also decorated with parallel ridges.
This type of object was traditionally used in ritual contexts related to secret societies (such as Bwiti) or ancestor worship, serving as a link between the world of the living and that of the spirits.
