Description from the seller
GENERAL
Offered at the Catawiki auction is a particularly splendid and extremely rare 1924 Willys Overland Tourer, with a mileage of 12,397 miles on the odometer. This pre-war American classic stands out for one of the most innovative engine technologies from the early days of the automobile, namely the famous and technically advanced Knight sleeve-valve engine with a power output of 19.6 hp. Whereas almost all cars of this period used traditional poppet valves with springs, this system with moving metal sleeves between the piston and cylinder wall was developed in 1905 by Charles Yale Knight. This specific Willys-Knight drivetrain was worldwide renowned for its exceptionally quiet operation, virtually vibration-free running, and a particularly smooth power delivery, with the engine often becoming even quieter as it accumulated more use due to carbon deposits on the sleeves. At the time it was an absolute pinnacle of engineering that was applied only by prestigious manufacturers, making it today an extremely rare and beloved item among collectors. This particular vehicle bears chassis number 43358 and engine number 84690, and represents the early glory days of the iconic Willys brand, long before it became world-famous for its military Jeeps.
BODYWORK & PAINT
The coachwork is finished in a classic red-and-black color scheme, with a red body and black fenders, entirely fitting for the appearance of a luxury American touring car from the twenties. The body is completely free of rust and in solid basic condition. The paint shows normal signs of use all around and can be cosmetically refreshed or completely resprayed to the buyer’s preference. The current condition is nevertheless neat enough to put the car to excellent use as an attractive driving car, while also providing an excellent base for further cosmetic perfection.
TECHNICAL
The original Knight sleeve-valve engine has been tested and runs. Before the car is fully and intensively put back into use, the fuel system should be thoroughly cleaned. This is regular and logical maintenance after a period of inactivity. The car is equipped with a manual transmission and, thanks to its unique engine construction, offers a historically important technology that functions mechanically perfectly after start-up service.
INTERIOR
The interior of this Tourer is finished in beautiful black full leather and is in absolute mint condition. The fabric appendix top is also in excellent mint condition. The entire compartment presents as particularly well cared for, is free of damage, and gives a faithful, high-quality impression of how this luxury automobile was originally delivered to the first owner in the twenties.
DOCUMENTS
The car originally comes from the United States and is supplied with an American registration document (USA Title). Import duties and VAT for the European Union have already been fully paid, so the documentation is ready for registration in any European country.
PICK-UP
The vehicle is physically located in Enter, the Netherlands, where the final transfer and pick-up after the auction will take place. Organizing transport and the associated costs are entirely the responsibility of the buyer.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
