The Kota mbulu-ngulu reliquary from Gabon of the Bakongo people, carved in wood and copper, dating to the late 20th century, height 46 cm, in good condition, sold with a stand.

These images present a traditional African sculpture of Kota type, more precisely a reliquary known as mbulu-ngulu
General structure: The piece features the stylized form characteristic of the Kota, composed of a prominent head, a diamond-shaped pierced body and a horizontal transversal bar at shoulder level. The whole rests on a modern black base.
The head The face is oval, slightly concave. Notable details: almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose and a finely sculpted mouth. The forehead is adorned with a vertical line of small metallic points (upholstery nails). Above, a crescent-shaped coiffure is topped with a central element. The reverse side of the piece shows a plainer and rougher sculpture. The head presents an angular shape with marked guiding lines, and the lower part (the body) consists of two diamond-shaped segments meeting at the center, creating a hollow space.
