Description from the seller
Antique Flower Holder (Jardinière) Art Nouveau in Barbotine Ceramic – Gustave De Bruyn (Fives-Lille), model 1460, circa 1900
Object Description
Overview
A refined and important centerpiece jardinière in maiolica (barbotine ceramic), a superb example of early 20th-century French Art Nouveau style. The piece was produced by the renowned Gustave De Bruyn manufactory in Fives-Lille (France).
Design and Decoration
The object stands out for its elegant flattened-oval bowl shape, enriched by a squarish-to-oval upper rim and prominent shaped scroll handles that frame the sides. The main relief decoration presents a fascinating botanical motif: large anemone (or peony) flowers finely modeled in high relief, shown both in full bloom and in bud, with sinuous stems and leaves wrapping around the body of the vase.
Colors and Glazes
The color palette boasts the typical richness of the era's impressionistic barbotine glazes. The background gradually shifts from a luminous light olive green at the top to a very dark deep forest green toward the base. The petals of the flowers stand out with delicate pink-ash and ivory-white shading, with touches of turquoise-blue and ochre in the central pistils. The entire glazed surface features the characteristic dense craquelé glaze of the period, optimal for confirming authenticity.
Marks and Identification
The base bears all historical marks impressed raw in the ceramic biscuit:
- Factory mark: The intertwined anchor with the monogrammed letters "DB" (Antoine Gustave De Bruyn).
- Model number: 1460 (identifier of the form in the manufactory's historical catalogues).
- Lot/size number: 3 (indicating the size scale of the lot).
There is also a brown-painted hand-mark traced by the master decorator.
Dimensions
Height: 24 cm
Maximum width (measured between the handles): 24 cm
Depth (maximum thickness): 14 cm
Condition of the item
The jardinière is in overall very good condition, retains a magnificent sheen and bright glazes. There is only a small chips due to wear on the lower edge of the base support (visible in close-up photos), which does not affect stability, solidity, or the esthetics of the piece when displayed. No restorations or cracks through the piece.
Packing and Shipping
The item will be professionally packed with maximum protection (double rigid cardboard, large-bubble bubble wrap, and polystyrene). Fast shipping via express courier, fully traceable and insured for the full value of the winning bid.
