Description from the seller
Rare Neo-Renaissance Folding Solid Wood Conversation Set in Carved Hardwood – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Elegant and rare conversation set composed of two folding armchairs and a coordinated coffee table, made of finely carved solid wood and attributable to European production dating from the late nineteenth century to the early years of the XX century.
The ensemble is distinguished by its distinctive architectural structure formed by parallel curved elements that create a refined sculptural effect. The cross-shaped bases with the characteristic wavy pattern give the furniture a strong aesthetic personality and testify to high-quality artisanal workmanship.
The two armchairs feature backrests richly carved with floral motifs, scrolls, and neorenaissance-style decorations. The armlike elements, elegantly pierced and finished with turned finials, complete a harmonious whole with a considerable decorative impact. The central table faithfully repeats the design of the seats, creating a perfectly coordinated composition.
Particularly interesting is the folding structure of the two seats, a feature quite rare for this type of furniture. This ingenious constructive system, typical of some productions from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, blends aesthetic value and practical functionality, increasing the historical and collectible interest of the lot.
The conversation set preserves the authentic charm of the time and a pleasant period patina. Being a piece of furniture dating from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, it shows normal signs of wear due to age and use over the years. There are abrasions, wear to the original finish, small wood imperfections, and a few woodworm holes, typical of antique furniture.
These age-related features are fully consistent with the period of the furniture and do not in any way compromise the structural stability of the two armchairs and the coffee table, which remain solid, stable, and usable. The traces of time contribute rather to increasing the historical charm and authenticity of the set.
The quality of the carvings, the complexity of the construction, the rarity of the folding mechanism, and the originality of the design make this conversation set an interesting example of European historicist cabinetmaking, ideal for collectors, antique dealers, and enthusiasts of period furnishings.
