Description from the seller
Description:
An exceptionally rare and well-preserved original leather purse from the Baroque period, precisely dated to the year 1741.
In the 18th century, these types of pouches were worn by both ladies and gentlemen, often tucked into clothing or suspended from a belt.
The shaped, scalloped frame is crafted from solid brass. The front side features delicate, period-typical engravings showcasing floral ornaments and elegant vine motifs.
The reverse side of the frame bears the clearly legible, contemporary engraved date "1741", alongside the original owner's initials.
The pouch itself is made of robust brown leather, which has developed a beautiful, authentic patina over the centuries.
The leather remains originally stitched directly into the brass frame via fine historical thread work.
The piece retains its typical period push-button clasp mechanism on top of the frame, as well as a period-correct twisted textile cord.
A wonderful collector's piece for enthusiasts of historical fashion accessories, Baroque antiquities, or Wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities) objects.
Details & Condition:
Period: Baroque / Rococo (18th Century)
Date: 1741 (engraved)
Material: Brass, leather, cord
Condition: Very good, age-appropriate original condition with a gorgeous patina. The leather is stable and structural; it shows some age-related crackle (fine surface cracks) and minor scuffs but is not torn through anywhere.
The brass frame shows light signs of age (minor oxidation/verdigris in the crevices, which underlines its authenticity). The clasp functions and holds in accordance with its age.
