Description from the seller
Authentic Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask.
TOP piece! The age is estimated around 1940.
One of the most beautiful you will ever see!
Origin: Angola.
Beautiful glossy dark patina.
Toward the ideal image of a beautiful young woman.
On the forehead we see the typical Chingelyengelye cross scarification.
However worn by male dancers.
See the tribal photo featuring a dancer like this.
It is a piece used in a tribal context, so we see the expected signs of use that underscore the authenticity of this piece.
Dimensions: Height 27 cm. Width 27 cm. Measured without coiffure
The fine coiffure with head covering is still present.
As well as the raffia-knotted neck cord!
A fantastic presence, authentic Africa!
Part of an older collection that I was able to acquire in my early years as a collector.
That dates back to the 1980s.
Some of this I sold in recent years because I had to downsizing my very large collection (space constraints).
The finest pieces I kept in storage but those are now also up for sale.
The original collector was a Belgian dealer in trucks and auto parts and tires; he had his business in Matadi in Belgian Congo before independence in 1960.
I acquired his collection in the late 1980s.
I had already been collecting African art for years at that time, and sometimes I acquired an entire older collection like this.
I have added some photos of him in his tire business in Congo; they are not included but I can email them if desired.
Pedestals or stands are never included.
