Description from the seller

GENERAL STRUCTURE
We present an extraordinary unit of the legendary Mercedes-Benz 220 D W115 from 1969, belonging to the early units built of the historic /8 series (Strich-Acht). Launched in late 1967, this generation designed by the renowned Paul Bracq revolutionized the brand by introducing a completely new chassis with rear semi-trailing arm suspension, breaking with the previous oscillating axles. The 2.2-liter OM615 engine delivering 60 horsepower in this version became the gold standard of diesel reliability of the era, laying the foundations for Mercedes-Benz’s worldwide reputation for indestructibility. The early W115s are particularly prized by collectors, especially in Germany, where early units command a higher valuation due to their numerous exclusive details compared to later versions, making this model a piece with enormous potential for appreciation, ready for collection, exhibition, or immediate enjoyment.

BODYWORK AND PAINT
The vehicle has been partially restored while preserving its absolute originality. The bodywork has been fully repainted in its factory-original color, looking impeccable and faithful to the era. To complement the model’s elegance, it also wears new whitewall tires, perfectly in keeping with the exterior aesthetics of high-end sedans from the late sixties.

MECHANICS
Mechanically, more than €20,000 has been invested in an exhaustive restoration and maintenance process. A comprehensive mechanical inspection has been carried out and a full restoration of the steering, suspension, brakes, transmission, and differential. Silent blocks, shock absorbers, seals, hoses, hydraulic elements, and various wear components have also been replaced. The mechanical work culminates with the restoration of the fuel injection pump and the replacement of numerous components with new original spare parts, ensuring optimal operation.

INTERIOR
This unit preserves one of the most emblematic and currently hard-to-find elements, namely the elegant column-mounted gear lever, a characteristic typical of late-60s classic Mercedes-Benz. It also features the exceptional original configuration with a three-abreast front bench seat, a rarity almost disappeared today and highly valued by true enthusiasts of the marque. The cabin maintains the aesthetic purity of the early series by preserving its original configuration without front headrests, and incorporates front seat belts as a period accessory. The interior retains a large part of its original upholstery, partially restored only where necessary. Special mention deserves the original Becker Grand Prix radio, completely restored and functioning perfectly, an exclusive unit that currently commands a value close to €1,000 in the classic car market.

DOCUMENTATION
On the administrative and historical side, the vehicle is up to date and roadworthy, with its Technical Inspection (ITV) fully valid and in force. The car also retains its original maintenance book, a document of enormous historical value for collectors that attests the care given and provides complete transparency about this exclusive unit’s history over the years.

PICKUP
The car can be collected in the Province of Seville, Spain. The vehicle must be removed from the seller’s premises within 7 days from its adjudication. If not, a daily storage fee of €25 will be charged, to be paid by the buyer at the time of pickup.

OTHER INFORMATION
This unit meets exactly what collectors seek in an authentic early W115 by combining first-series specifications, the steering-column gear lever, the front three-abreast bench seat, the original configuration, and a full restoration. All of this results in an elegant aesthetic that is very hard to replicate today in the classic car market.

Disclaimer

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
