Description from the seller
GERMANY. Westphalia. 10,000 Mark. 1923.
- Value: 10,000 Mark.
- Year: 1923.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: "Notgeld der Provinz Westfalen. 10,000 Mark 1923". Reverse: "Minister vom Stein. Deutschlands Führer in schwerer Zeit 1757-1831".
- Grading: MS62 (NGC)
Bronze coin issued as Notgeld by the Prussian province of Westphalia during Germany's 1923 hyperinflation. The obverse features the portrait of Franz Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, a prominent reformer, educator and statesman of Westphalia, shown in profile with a sober modeling and surrounded by his name in gothic characters. The reverse displays the prancing horse, a traditional emblem of Westphalia, accompanied by the Notgeld legend, the province name, the high face value of 10,000 Mark and the issue date. Minted in bronze, this variant reflects the use of alternative materials during the severe monetary crisis Germany faced. The piece preserves well-defined reliefs, surfaces with an attractive original brown-gold patina and partly preserved mint luster, showing only slight contact marks typical of Mint State conservation, features fully in keeping with the MS62 grade awarded by NGC. This issue is part of the emblematic Westphalia Notgeld series, which has become one of the most representative numismatic testimonies of Germany's 1923 hyperinflation and of the measures taken by regional authorities to maintain monetary circulation.
