Art Deco side table in Dutch oak with a twisted leg and ornate brass-top details, dating from the early 1920s to around 1930, reflecting the Amsterdamse School influence.
Description from the seller
Beautiful Art Deco side table, typically a product of the Amsterdam School, made of lovely oak with a beautifully twisted leg on a nicely turned base (see photos).
The weight of the little table is about 5 kg, height 59 cm and diameter 50 cm. The table is made from Dutch oak, still dried in the old-fashioned way. The top of the side table is made of lathe-turned brass that has been engraved with all kinds of images of Oriental scenes (it looks like Chinese with weapons) but also Egyptian imagery, such as the Egyptian cat (see photos). This latter detail helps with dating. This kind of table (side table / smoking table) was made in the Art Deco period (roughly between 1920 and 1940). Egyptian motifs indicate a period between 1922 (the year Howard Carter discovered the nearly intact tomb of Tutankhamen) and 1930. The discovery sparked a huge fascination with the ancient Egypt, also known as Egyptomania or the Egyptian Revival.
Lathe-turned brass is thinly rolled brass. This was then stretched over the wood of the top. In this way, a top was created that could not burn if a cigarette or cigar fell from the ashtray.
The table is therefore probably manufactured in the 1920s. This kind of small tables were often used as smoking tables. The table is still almost 100% original, although it could be that the top with the wooden screw-thread mounting was ever adjusted or reinforced. This, however, happened long ago (see photos). The tabletop with the very thin brass stretched over it has a slight waviness (see photos). This is very common with these kinds of tables, and certainly not distracting!
This table is still in very good condition and completely stable. Here and there it shows logical signs of use, for example a few small dents in the brass and very light spots on the wood (see photos), but these are all merely logical signs of use. The table can still be used as a smoking table, but of course also simply as a side table.
The table can be disassembled into three parts (see photos). To keep the package compact, it will be shipped that way. After arrival, the table is again easy and quick to assemble.
The table will be expertly packed and shipped insured.
