Description from the seller

Rien Wensma – Handmade ceramic bowl/ vase/ dish with miniature town – Built-up town – Studio Pottery – ca. 1970–1975 – Hand-signed

A remarkable and playful piece of Dutch studio ceramics by artist Rien Wensma. This built-up town object is executed as a round bowl, dish, or vase whose rim is designed as a small, fanciful town: houses, towers, trees, and architectural elements form together a sculptural skyline.

Wensma was known for his free, almost narrative approach to ceramics. Instead of purely functional shapes, he created objects where architecture, landscape, and ceramic art come together. This piece seems to depict a small town that grows around the dish – a charming blend of utilitarian object and sculpture.

The handmade details are clearly visible: the small windows, roofs, and towers are individually modeled, giving each element its own character. The dish is finished with a beautifully speckled blue glaze, subtly blending into earth tones at the architectural edge. This type of glaze and design is characteristic of the work Wensma created in his studio during the 1970s.

On the underside, the object bears the incised monogram “RW,” the artist’s studio mark.

Through the combination of sculptural form, artisanal character, and playful architectural details, this is an attractive piece for collectors of Dutch studio ceramics and vintage design from the 1970s.

A decorative object that can be presented both as a bowl and as a small ceramic artwork.
