Geanodised aluminium vintage train coat rack from West Germany in a gold colour, dating to 1955–1965, measuring 78 cm wide, 13 cm high and 78 cm deep, weighing about 700 g, in good condition with minor signs of age and staining.
Description from the seller
Very decorative train-style coat rack. The coat rack is made entirely of anodized aluminum. It is 78 cm wide, 13 cm high, and 78 cm deep. The weight is just over 700 g. This coat rack originates from Germany (West Germany before the fall of the Wall), and it hung in a train there. The coat rack dates from the 1950s or 1960s of the last century. Many of these anodized coat racks were made by the West German company Verralux, which was based in Fürth, a historic industrial city in the German state of Bavaria.
Anodized means that the aluminum is placed in a chemical bath (acid). An electric current is then passed through it, causing the aluminum to react with oxygen. This creates a controlled, porous oxide layer. In these microscopically small pores a dye (in this case a gold pigment) is applied. Then the pores are 'sealed' in boiling water, which locks the color permanently into the metal. The material thus becomes not only beautifully gold-colored, but is also more wear-resistant than aluminum and protected against corrosion.
The coat rack has a quite elegant industrial design, with decorative scrolls and nice curves, but is also made for practicality. Both brackets sit firmly and immovably in the wall mount. This is because they are filled at the back with a kind of clay, which ensures that the aluminum bonding remains tight and stable (see photos). This makes the coat rack 100% stable. The five aluminum hooks are still sturdy and stable and can be slid along the entire rod. The braided hat shelf is woven with rope. This woven rope is attached to the frame with small springs. This attachment is still firm and tight. Also the rope is still fairly tight and does not sag. The aluminum shows typical use marks all along the coat rack, but for its age it still looks very good!
The aluminum still has a very nice shine, and the gold vintage look gives this coat rack a chic Hollywood Regency or Mid-Century Modern appearance! It makes for a very nice functional furnishing piece in any interior. Beautiful, nostalgic and functional!
The coat rack will be expertly packed and shipped insured.
