Description from the seller
Antique Monetary Balance for Currency Exchange with Weights and Submultiples – Late 19th Century
Rare and complete period numismatic set (late 1800s / early 1900s), used by merchants and bankers to verify gold and silver coins circulating in the Italian area.
The lot includes:
Precision balance: handcrafted with arms and a needle (frastaglia) in steel/forged iron, and smooth circular brass pans suspended by original green cords.
Original box: Shaped dark wood case with custom compartments for each element. Inside the lid is the characteristic oval factory stamp impressed by heat (partially faded with time). Included are vintage cardboard discs placed on the bottom to protect the pans from rubbing.
Complete set of weights: Series of circular brass weights with a leaf-wreath decoration (notably 100 Lire, 50 Lire, 20 Lire denominations). Rare and minute submultiples, including several square lamellar weights. One precision knurled-weight in white metal with a knob, used for millimetric calculation of tolerance and wear of the precious metal.
Conditions: Excellent historical condition, with a beautiful natural patina of time on wood and metals. Instrument intact, not tested for millimetric precision but exceptional as a collectible. Entirely original item.
