Antique Neogothic/Neogothic-style wall holy-water font in solid hand-hammered and pierced silver (800/1000) dating to the mid-19th century, with a central high-relief depicting the Noli me tangere scene, made in Italy; height 16 cm, width 7.5 cm, depth 3 cm, weight 43 g, in good condition with age-related marks.
Description from the seller
Splendid and rare antique Neogothic wall holy water font, entirely made in hammered, chased and hand-cut silver. The piece features at the center a refined bas-relief depicting the Evangelical scene of the "Noli me tangere" (the appearance of the Risen Jesus to Mary Magdalene near the tomb). The entire scene is set within an architectural aedicule with pointed arches, tracery and pinnacles typical of the nineteenth-century Neogothic taste. The lower basin for collecting holy water is shaped like a shell (scallop).
Authenticity and Punching: The object bears the famous and historic hammer-on-anvil punch with a free profile, a territorial guarantee mark used in the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom (and in the early stages of the Kingdom of Italy) between 1812 and 1873 to certify the second title of the silver (silver 800/1000) on small-sized works or exempt pieces. The authenticity of the metal has been further verified and successfully confirmed through a chemical test with nitric acid on a testing stone.
Material: Authentic 800 silver
Era: Mid-19th Century
Height: about 16 cm
Weight: 43 grams
Conditions: Excellent overall condition, with a beautiful patina of time and normal signs of wear consistent with the period
