Description from the seller
Byzantine cauldron incense burner in bronze with three suspension chains. Suspended bronze incense burner, cast. Ringed base, hemispherical body adorned with two indented circular lines, small flat rim topped by three suspension rings. The cauldron is held by bronze suspension chains and a hook. Byzantine period, 4th to 7th century AD. Width 8.2 cm, height 4.8 cm (height 31 cm with chains and suspension hook).
Very good condition - all pieces are original
Provenance: private Belgian collection formed in the 1960s–1990s
Incense-burning cauldrons were used from the reign of Constantine the Great, mainly in the Byzantine Empire. They were suspended at various locations in churches and shaken during ceremonies.
