Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Antique brass scarificator from circa 1900–1910, French origin, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Authentic and rare medical surgical instrument from the 19th century: a scarificator with concealed blades (sometimes called the German scarificator or "bloodletting box"). Entirely made of solid brass with an internal steel mechanism, this object is a superb testimony to the history of medicine and surgery in the 19th century.
Operation and Mechanism:
This precision device was used to perform bleeding or vaccinations quickly and regularly:
Face for application: The octagonal base features a grid of parallel slits designed to let a series of sharp blades pass through.
Firing lever: The curved metal lever allows the strong internal spring to be tensioned and to retract the blades inside the brass block.
Adjustment wheel: The micrometric screw on top allows very precise control of the blade exit depth.
Trigger: The small lateral button acts as a trigger to release the blades in one swift motion.
Condition:
Very good aesthetic and mechanical condition.
The mechanism is complete: the lever cocks perfectly and the trigger mechanism releases clearly.
Magnificent original brass patina, preserved as is, not polished to maintain all the authenticity of its historical patina.
