Bronze commemorative medal of Marshal Jean de Lattre de Tassigny
Superb large Florence bronze desk medal, depicting Marshal of France Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (1889-1952).
Obverse:
Left profile of the Marshal in uniform, wearing his distinctive kepi. Raised inscriptions:
“JEAN DE LATTRE DE TASSIGNY” and “MARÉCHAL DE FRANCE”.
Under the bust: “1889-1952”.
Signed by the engraver Pierre Turin (or F. Turin on the piece).
Over the shoulder: badge “Rhin and Danube” of the 1st French Army.
Condition: Very good to excellent condition (see detailed photos). Beautiful even patina, no major dings, clear reliefs. Diameter about 68-72 mm, characteristic heavy weight (approximately 160-220 g depending on variants).
Historical context:
Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, one of the great French military leaders of World War II, commanded the 1st French Army (the “Rhin and Danube Army”) which took part in the liberation of France and the German campaign in 1944-1945. Raised posthumously to the dignity of Marshal of France in 1952. This commemorative medal, the work of Pierre Turin (official engraver of the Monnaie de Paris), honors his legendary figure.
