Rare mid‑century Chanukah menorah in solid 925 sterling silver, designed and handcrafted by Plata Mex S.A. (Taxco) in the 1950s, with eight lamp holders and a shamas stem on a sweeping set of silver arcs, dimensions 25.0 cm long, 13.7 cm high, base Ø 8.5 cm, weighing about 240 g, from Mexico, in good vintage condition with a minor defect where a solder joint at the foot–arc connection has slightly loosened.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally elegant and rare Chanukah menorah (Chanukiah) crafted in solid 925 sterling silver, designed and masterfully handmade by the renowned Mexican silversmith Empresa Plat-Mex S.A. (Taxco) during the Mid-Century Modern era (c. 1950s/1960s).
This spectacular collectible breaks with traditional forms and captivates with an avant-garde, minimalist design: the eight sockets for the Chanukah lights, as well as the slightly elevated socket for the Shamash (servant candle), sit atop a row of breathtakingly curved, dynamic silver arches. The entire construction rests on a timelessly elegant, round trumpet foot.
On the underside of the foot, or the body, lies the original authentic maker’s mark: “PLAT MEX S.A. 925 STERLING.” A menorah of this specific Plat-Mex S.A. model is rarely found on the market and constitutes an exquisite highlight for any discerning Judaica or design collection.
Dimensions & weight:
• Length: 25.0 cm
• Height (highest point): 13.7 cm
• Foot diameter: 8.5 cm
• Total weight: approx. 240 grams (.925 sterling silver)
Condition:
Good, well-maintained vintage condition with one cosmetic flaw: at the junction between the base and the curved silver arches, an old solder joint has slightly come loose (see detail photo). The piece is otherwise completely stable, does not wobble, and remains in solid original condition.
