Description from the seller
Ravishing Moss Agate and Gilded Metal Cabinet Snuff Box
Elegant small rectangular box, capable of serving as a snuff box or pill box, featuring delicate tablet-work. It is composed of finely polished moss agate (calcédonine) slabs set in a gilded metal frame (likely vermeil, gilded bronze, or gilded brass).
• The Material: Moss agate stands out for its deep green dendritic inclusions, creating organic patterns reminiscent of woodland landscapes or moss. In photographs taken with backlighting, one can see the superb quality of the stone, displaying complex branching against a translucent background.
• The Setting: Discreet hinge at the back and a spherical push-button on the front. Small incisions inside the metal show traces of assembly work. A sign of handcrafted labor.
• The Footing: The box rests on four baluster-style feet finished with coordinated hard-stone cabochons (agate), a rare and refined finish.
• Era: Probably 19th century (Neoclassical or Biedermeier style).
• Condition: Good overall condition. There is a patina of use on the metal and good integrity of the stone slabs (no visible cracks in the photos).
