The Chokwe mask depicting an elderly woman evokes wisdom, the knowledge accumulated over the years, and the honor paid to feminine ancestors. Worn during traditional rites and festivities, it underscores the importance of women in preserving and transmitting the community's cultural heritage.
The Chokwe are a Bantu-speaking people of Central and Southern Africa, mainly present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Angola, and to a lesser extent in Zambia. A few thousand also live in Namibia.
This dance and initiation mask is in good condition (see photo). The materials used are wood, natural pigment.
